The government wants to spy on your Facebook and WhatsApp messages

Facebook

The US Justice Department has joined the UK and Australian governments in an open letter calling for Facebook to kill end-to-end encryption on its messaging platforms. Experts agree that strong security measures like encryption make us safer by protecting our personal accounts -- as well as our banks, water treatment facilities and nuclear power plants -- from malicious attacks. But the government seems to think that spying on your private messages is more important than your safety and security.

WILL FACEBOOK DO THE RIGHT THING?

Facebook has a long history of abusing your data. For years, the social media giant has harvested information about you from apps you use and websites you visit to create a profitable advertising network. But Facebook played fast and loose with your personal information, exposing it to hackers and giving it away to bad actors who manipulated our democratic processes.

In the face of massive public outrage, Facebook has finally begun making efforts to protect your online privacy and security. Rolling out encrypted messages is a step in the right direction. And behind closed doors, Facebook leadership has prepared for clashes with law enforcement agencies over privacy and security issues. But now we need the social media giant to make a public commitment to protecting us from dangerous government overreach. Let’s keep the pressure on Facebook to ensure they do the right thing.

Sign our petition now to urge Facebook's leadership to stand up for your rights. Don’t let the US Justice Department and other government agencies access your sensitive data through dangerous digital backdoors!
