Tribune Publishing: Sun Sentinel journalists deserve a fair contract now!

Tribune Publishing

The journalists of the South Florida Sun Sentinel are engaged in a fight with their owner for fair treatment, livable wages and the chance to continue effectively covering our community.

Tribune Publishing, run by hedge-fund Alden Global Capital, has already demonstrated its lack of investment in the Sun Sentinel’s future, the quality of its product or the well-being of its employees.

The company canceled our retirement benefits, eliminated our annual raises nearly a decade ago, will not fairly reimburse employees for expenses, and continues to cut the newspaper’s staff.

Alden Global Capital is notorious for acquiring newspapers and then slashing their staff without concern for the communities that depended on them for news.

In August 2024, Sun Sentinel staffers formed the Sun Sentinel Guild. We had no other option. Tribune continued to cut our compensation and our staff, failed to fill positions that left gaps in our coverage and appeared content to watch us struggle financially and see the quality of the newspaper’s coverage decline.

We’re asking you to stand with us by signing this petition, which asks Tribune Publishing to agree to a contract that includes better wages and benefits. We understand we’re merely one spoke in the giant corporate wheel that is Tribune Publishing, but our work is important to our South Florida community.

Please help us by signing a petition that will be presented to the company’s management. Thank you.

We demand that Tribune Publishing give the journalists of the South Florida Sun Sentinel a fair contract with reasonable wages and benefits.

These journalists work long hours, on a shrinking staff, to cover their community. They spend evenings at city commission meetings, rush to the scenes of homicides, provide analysis of games by the Miami Dolphins, Miami Heat and other sports teams, scrutinize changes in homeowner’s insurance, keep tabs on new restaurants and cover countless other aspects of their beautiful and challenging South Florida community.

But they do this in spite of a lack of support from Tribune Publishing. The company canceled its only retirement benefit for journalists, stopped providing annual raises nearly a decade ago, and all the while, constantly cutting the staff.

This isn’t right. It’s a reflection of greed by wealthy owners who have shown a lack of interest in their employees’ well-being. And it’s a further reflection of a lack of commitment to a quality product. It’s unfair to journalists who work hard to cover their communities, while trying to raise families, pay mortgages or rents, and plan for their retirements.

In signing this petition, we’re demanding that Tribune Publishing and Alden Global Capital support journalists who want fair compensation and equitable benefits to provide high-quality coverage of the South Florida community.
