Turn down the heat in NSW

[UPDATE: to new Planning Minister Anthony Roberts] Premier Dominic Perrottet, Minister for Jobs, Investment, Tourism and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres and Planning Minister Rob Stokes

Heatwaves are Australia’s most deadly environmental disaster.

Baking temperatures in our cities are dangerous for some of our most vulnerable or marginalised community members, including older people, people with disabilities, people with chronic illnesses and small children. People may be isolated in their homes or forced to seek relief in shopping centres or libraries. Others are dreading summer and having to choose between paying for cooling or household essentials.

Climate change means heatwaves will be longer, hotter and more frequent. Western Sydney is projected to have over 50 days per year over 35°C by 2090.

We can and should protect the community from the dangers of extreme heat.

We need a big, ambitious plan from the NSW Government to cool down our suburbs and support the people who are most vulnerable to extreme heat.

We are calling for NSW to:

- Build cooler suburbs and homes by raising standards for reducing and adapting to heat, and commit to measures across developments of all sizes which reduce the urban heat island effect, achieve highest standards of environmental sustainability and set standards according to future climate projections

- Review the State Heatwave Emergency Plan to include measures to support the community in extreme events

- Prioritise and fund energy efficiency and cooling programs in hot suburbs

- Share plans for heat mitigation and adaptation with communities and gather feedback on local strategies

- Support high standards of energy efficiency in the National Construction Code

By taking these steps, NSW can be a leader in developing beautiful climate resilient cities.
