UC: Top Talent Deserves Top Dollar! Pay Bilingual Workers Fair Pay!
UC Chancellors and Medical Center CEOs
The UC agreed to provide bilingual pay in our current CX Teamsters contract but refuses to certify or pay workers for bilingual services. We want to send a message that our diverse language skills make us more than essential, and we deserve additional pay for these skills!
The UC brings in billions every year from public funding and rising student tuition but still tries to force their own workers to pay more in healthcare, transportation and parking costs. They claim a commitment to public service while saying there is no more money for the bilingual workers who keep the UC running.
We’re gearing up for a tough fight--the UC claims that they "can't afford" to pay bilingual workers or absorb rising healthcare or parking and transportation. We say baloney! The UC can afford expensive new construction and massive raises for campus leadership. With their many sources of income—including billions of dollars of revenue from hospitals and medical centers—they are well-positioned to move money in order to pay these costs. Where would our members find this additional money? Many UC workers are barely making ends meet as it is.
Let’s tell UC that we expect productive negotiations that protect our pay for bilingual workers and preserve the salary steps implemented in our current contract. World-class universities call for top talent. Top talent deserves top dollar!

We are calling for “Bilingual Blackout Days” every Wednesday in April. In short, if the UC asks you to interpret and bilingual skills is NOT a job requirement and you are not receiving a bilingual stipend, don’t do it. You have the right to refuse!

Chancellors and Medical Center Executives,
The UC takes in billions of dollars each year from public funding, tuition, research, and its multi-billion-dollar hospitals and health system. Yet the institution continues to offload higher costs for healthcare, transportation, and parking onto employees—many of whom are already financially strapped and struggling day after day. Meanwhile, fancy new buildings rise and executive salaries continue to climb. This is not acceptable.
We will not accept a contract that shifts financial burdens onto employees while the UC continues to amass resources. The UC cannot be a world-class university and premier medical institution without the staff who work tirelessly to keep them operating.
We expect you to demonstrate leadership by committing to fair, equitable compensation and benefits during upcoming negotiations, and to enforce previously negotiated contract agreements, including directing departments and health centers to certify and pay eligible workers the Bilingual Services Stipend. World-class universities call for top talent. Top talent deserves top dollar!
