Unban Anti-Racism Education (aka, Critical Race Theory) in Iowa

Kim Reynolds

The Truth Will Not Be WhitewashedBy banning anti-racism education plus diversity, equity, and inclusion programming in the classroom, the government of Iowa is whitewashing history and blatantly positioning the success of white students over BIPOC (aka, Global Majority) students. Join with Great Plains Action Society, Humanize My Hoodie, and Blue Future to demand a repeal of this ban.

The social narratives we grow up hearing and telling ourselves day in and out shape not only who we are, but the way we see the world around us. The narrative of the United States of America is expressed through the study of history. However, history is rarely taught truthfully and, for centuries, students have been indoctrinated into curricula that protect the comforts of those with power and privilege and which disallows the realities of most student populations in primary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions across the country. The Global Majority has been confined to the paradigm of whitewashed histories for centuries, yet and still, proactive measures are not being taken to ensure shared comfort, perspectives, and honesty among all. Anti-racism and diversity advocates have long struggled to re-shape school content and environments that reflect Euro-American ideals that perpetuate romanticized versions of history, which erase the atrocities committed in the US like Indigenous genocide and Black slavery. The result of this struggle has been the creation of diversity, equity, and inclusion curriculum, also known as, anti-racism education, decolonization work, and critical race theory.

Here in Iowa, legislators have banned anti-racism education and are proactively working to prevent the accurate experiences of the Global Majority in order to maintain the status quo of whitewashed history that perpetuates insidious and dangerous racial and LGBTQIA+ oppression. For the sake of health and safety for all, it is imperative that Kim Reynolds reverse the overtly white supremacist decision to ban anti-racism education plus diversity, equity, and inclusion programming in the classroom and in all state-funded institutions. Kim Reynolds, Governor of Iowa.

We, the undersigned, demand that the state of Iowa unban anti-racism education (aka, critical race theory).

By banning anti-racism education plus diversity, equity, and inclusion programming in the classroom, the government of Iowa is whitewashing history and blatantly positioning the success of white students over BIPOC (aka, Global Majority) students.

History is rarely taught truthfully and, for centuries, students have been indoctrinated into curricula that protect the comforts of those with power and privilege and which disallows the realities of most student populations in primary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions across the country.

Governor, by banning anti-racism education you are proactively working to prevent the accurate experiences of the Global Majority in order to maintain the status quo of whitewashed history that perpetuates insidious and dangerous racial and LGBTQIA+ oppression. For the sake of health and safety for all, it is imperative that you and this administration reverse the overtly white supremacist decision to ban anti-racism education plus diversity, equity, and inclusion programming in the classroom and in all state-funded institutions.
Signed,

Citizens of Iowa
