Urge World Leaders: Deliver a Fossil Fuel Phaseout Plan
Country Representatives
Earlier this spring, world leaders gathered in Santa Marta, Colombia for the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels.
As petrostates and fossil fuel lobbyists continue to thwart progress at United Nations COP climate summits, this group of over 50 countries agreed to form a “coalition of the willing” to work out the practical steps of implementing a just global energy transition.
While there’s still work to be done after the Santa Marta conference, this marked a meaningful step toward moving beyond fossil fuels and diplomatic gridlock.
Act now: Tell world leaders to keep up the momentum after Santa Marta and build strong domestic fossil fuel phaseout plans.
Climate Reality will deliver the letter to country representatives on behalf of the signatories and share the number of signers by country. No personal information will be shared with recipients.

In April, you gathered with more than 50 countries in Santa Marta, Colombia for the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels.
After recent United Nations COP climate summits failed to yield necessary action, you joined a “coalition of the willing” to work out the practical steps of a just global energy transition. I’m writing to thank you for stepping up to fill that gap in climate leadership.
For years, petrostates and fossil fuel interests have gamed the COP system to sink any ambitious effort to reduce emissions and accelerate the energy transition. Santa Marta was an indication that political will is growing and this and future COP presidencies must act on it before it is too late.
Even with growing momentum, a roadmap for transitioning away from fossil fuels was blocked by oil and gas interests at last year’s COP 30 in Belém, making the Santa Marta conference even more essential.
While Santa Marta was a step in the right direction, we’re writing to urge you to keep up the momentum after this historic conference. As a member of the “coalition of the willing,” it’s clear you take the urgency of the climate crisis seriously.
Now, you can demonstrate your climate leadership by working with the COP 30 Presidency toward a global roadmap for a fair and equitable fossil fuel transition. Additionally, you can turn that plan into action at home by releasing a national fossil fuel phaseout plan and raising the ambition of your climate commitments ahead of COP 31.
The current fossil fuel supply and price shocks remind us more than ever that fossil fuel dependency makes our economies vulnerable to unstable global energy markets, with the most dire impacts being felt by the poorest communities.
Thank you again for joining the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels. In Santa Marta, you helped launch the first-ever forum created to address the fossil fuel transition. With your continued leadership, our nation can drive collective action and put us on the path toward a fair energy transition.
