Urgent Request for Safety Measures for Students at María C. Sánchez School

City of Hartford Planning and Zoning Department

[ english below ]

Every day, our students and their families have to cross the streets to get to school and back home. In this area, we do not have sufficient safety measures for pedestrians, such as stop signs, clearly marked crosswalks, warning signs, or other mechanisms that help stop or slow down traffic.

This situation poses a risk, especially during school arrival and dismissal times, when there are large numbers of children, parents, students, and vehicles on the road at the same time. We are also concerned that the after-school program will begin soon.

Our children have the right to get to school safely. Student safety must be a priority for our city, and we must not wait for a serious accident to occur before taking action.

For this reason, we respectfully request that the City of Hartford:

  • Conduct an urgent road and pedestrian safety assessment on the streets surrounding María C. Sánchez School.

  • Evaluate the installation of STOP signs, visible crosswalks, and school zone signs where necessary.

  • Consider measures to reduce vehicle speeds during drop-off and pick-up times.

  • Assess the need for school crossing guards or other traffic control measures.

  • Work directly with families, the PTO, and the HDD School Committee to identify the most hazardous areas.

  • Please inform us of the measures the City can implement and the process and timeline for addressing this situation.

As families and members of the community, we want to work with the City to find concrete solutions. We are available to conduct a safety walkthrough of the area with City representatives, identify the highest-risk spots, and participate in a meeting to discuss possible solutions.

Our children’s safety cannot wait. We hope this concern will be addressed with the urgency it deserves and that we can work together to ensure that every student can get to and from school safely.

Dear Representatives of the City of Hartford,

We are writing to you on behalf of the María C. Sánchez School PTO and the Hartford Deportation Defense (HDD) Familias Unidas Schools Committee to express our deep concern for the safety of our children, families, and community members as they cross the streets near the school.

- Conduct an urgent road and pedestrian safety assessment on the streets surrounding María C. Sánchez School.
- Evaluate the installation of STOP signs, visible crosswalks, and school zone signs where necessary.
- Consider measures to reduce vehicle speeds during drop-off and pick-up times.
- Assess the need for school crossing guards or other traffic control measures.
- Work directly with families, the PTO, and the HDD School Committee to identify the most hazardous areas.
- Please inform us of the measures the City can implement and the process and timeline for addressing this situation.
