UTEP: Reverse Exclusionary ADA Parking Permit Prices

The Texas State Employees Union (CWA Local 6186) is a rank-and-file union representing all state employees, including university workers. TSEU fights for economic, racial, gender, and disability justice in our communities and workplaces. The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is a top-tier research university attracting a diverse workforce and student body, including disabled community members and disabled veterans. To keep the campus accessible to its faculty, staff, and students, especially those who are disabled, we demand that the University immediately address its exclusionary ADA parking permits.
ADA parking at The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) is currently one of the most expensive parking permits for students and employees. UTEP faculty and staff ADA parking permits were $500.00 for the 2019-20 academic year, with student ADA parking permits costing $250.00. The cost of ADA employee permits for 2019-20 are around the same cost of current expensive parking garage permits for 2020-21. UTEP currently has no plans to lower the cost of regular or ADA parking permits for employees, even given the unprecedented changes this semester due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After examining the cost of ADA parking permits at other institutions in the UT System, we found that UTEP has the most expensive ADA permits for students and employees. Below are the pricing disparities for employee ADA parking permits:

Students and employees with disabilities have no option but to park close to campus and should not be financially punished for it. The University has shown its support for disabled veterans by allowing them to access ADA parking free of charge; we simply ask that the same policy be extended to all disabled students and employees. Thus, we urge the University to make ADA parking permits free for students and employees with ADA accommodations. We urge the public—students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and community members—to sign this petition in solidarity to encourage UTEP’s Parking and Transportation Office to waive ADA parking fees for disabled students and workers.
