Vibrant Valencia for All

A vibrant, Kid-safe Valencia for all. Sign the petition asking SFMTA to pilot a greenway

Let's make Valencia a vibrant, kid-safe corridor in the heart of San Francisco

We’re thrilled that SFMTA is returning to Valencia Street after its commitment

to deliver protected bikeways 2022. There is broad agreement between merchants, advocates, and SFMTA on the urgent need for protected bike lanes. However, the existing center-running lane, while able to be implemented quickly, falls short of what’s needed to create a street that works for everyone, especially space for kids and active mobility users of all ages and abilities.

Valencia has the potential to be a vibrant, safe corridor for everyone. To get there, SFMTA must prioritize safety, active transportation, commerce, and proactive climate action, while maintaining necessary vehicle access and loading space.

To do this, we call on SFMTA to test an ambitious design that:

  1. Shows bold vision by piloting a greenway and two-way cycle track on Valencia
  2. Supports a vibrant nightlife by continuing the weekend Shared Spaces car-free promenade
  3. Prioritizes safety by including permanent protection for people on bikes

For years, Valencia has been a dangerous corridor, with over 100 injuries in the last five years, countless cars and delivery vehicles blocking bike lanes, and dangerous injection of fast cars into a busy neighborhood.

SFMTA has proposed welcome bike lane improvements for this road by the end of 2022, but the proposed center-running lane falls short of meeting the goals of a safe route for kids, grandparents, and other vulnerable users. We have seen a glimpse of the potential that a safe Valencia offers through the SF Shared Spaces closures, opening up street space for music, community-building, dining, and safe transport, all while improving multi-modal access to businesses.

I urge you to act to envision a safer, more welcoming, and lively street design by piloting a two-way bikeway, continuing the weekend shared spaces. We cannot miss this opportunity to envision a new, vibrant Valencia Street for all.
