We are concerned parents of Long Island City High School. It has been brought to our attention that the principal of the building, Vivian Selenikas, abuses her authority and has proven she does not care for the well-being of our students and more importantly, our children while they are in the care of the staff for 8 or more hours every single day. An assistant principal suffered in silence due to her actions, and this has not been the first teacher to feel discriminated against. She has pushed many good teachers out and these educators deserve better.

We are concerned about Vivian Selenikas as a principal, and the security of the school to which we trust to send these students every day. There have been many incidents in which we as parents were uninformed of the safety of our children. We have had intruders in our school, a stabbing took place, and a student entered the school with a gun. The principal has failed in her job to make the parents aware of what was happening. We have students who come to school but walk the halls all day or leave school completely. What role does the principal play in promoting a safe school environment for our students, when so much is allowed to continue to go on without any intervention? The number of hall walkers has increased since September. Where is the prevention plan to make sure these children are attending classes and being educated? Many of these students who roam the halls during their class time participate in drug use. It is the responsibility of the principal to handle these issues herself or delegate to qualified and experienced staff to make sure those students are not harming themselves and are being educated on the danger of drug use, or negatively affecting other students. The students and staff themselves should also be aware of any potential threats to their safety while they are in the midst of learning. However, there are no procedures in place to notify students and staff who are all at risk in order to protect themselves. Furthermore, there are no follow-up meetings to notify if any incident has already been handled or not. If there is an intruder in the building that can harm our children and these teachers, LET THEM KNOW. Society has drastically changed over the past couple of years, and in that time as principal, Vivian Selenikas has not provided adequate support or put a strategic plan in place for her students.

We have lost confidence in Principal Selenikas's leadership continuing Long Island City High School as evidenced by her past actions. She has had 5 different assistant principals in the past 3 years, and if staff continue to resign and remain inconsistent due to her lack of proper leadership, how can we as parents be assured that our children are receiving the education, nurturing, and social-emotional support needed throughout their high school career? If your own staff are fearful of you and cannot carry out the duties of an educator because they are catering to your will, we as parents are afraid of how this will impact their college readiness and development at Long Island City High School. My child should be able to attend school and feel safe knowing who they can confide in for any kind of issue. They should not be afraid for their safety, or deal with racism from adults and witness their favorite teachers quit. Vivian Selenikas is self-indulged, delusional, and racist due to her failure to hold herself accountable and self-reflect. She has not directly answered any questions and has not taken any initiative to reach out to her staff or students. Instead, we continue to witness her bully staff members and fail to address and put plans in place to address school-related issues. It is of utmost importance that our children come first and if the principal is not capable of respecting her staff, how can we entrust her with the lives and fair treatment of our students and children and the identities that they carry with them to school every day? Do better.

Hemos perdido la confianza en el liderazgo de la directora Selenikas para continuar con la escuela secundaria de la ciudad de Long Island, como lo demuestran sus acciones pasadas. Ella ha tenido 5 subdirectores diferentes en los últimos 3 años, y si el personal continúa renunciando y sigue siendo inconsistente debido a su falta de liderazgo adecuado, ¿cómo podemos nosotros, como padres, estar seguros de que nuestros hijos están recibiendo la educación, el cuidado y la atención social? apoyo emocional necesario a lo largo de su carrera en la escuela secundaria? Si su propio personal le teme y no puede llevar a cabo los deberes de un educador porque está atendiendo su voluntad, nosotros, como padres, tenemos miedo de cómo esto afectará su preparación y desarrollo universitario en Long Island City High School. Es de suma importancia que nuestros niños sean lo primero y si la directora no es capaz de respetar a su personal, ¿cómo podemos confiarle la vida y el trato justo de nuestros estudiantes y niños y las identidades que llevan consigo a la escuela todos los días? ?
