Voice Media Group: New Times journalists deserve a fair contract!

Voice Media Group

The journalists of Phoenix New Times and Miami New Times are engaged in a fight with our owner for fair wages, adequate parental leave and the chance to continue effectively covering our communities.

Voice Media Group, which owns both newspapers, has demonstrated an unwillingness to invest in its employees’ futures by refusing to:

  • raise wages to reflect rising costs of living and the experience of journalists
  • offer more than two weeks of paid parental leave
  • guarantee quality health care
  • create a sensible vacation policy

The company also refuses to agree to a discipline policy that provides true just-cause protections to its workers.

These decisions ultimately affect news coverage and the well-being of employees while making it harder to retain talented journalists.

We’re asking our communities to stand with us by signing this petition, which asks Voice Media Group to agree to a fair contract.

If you believe the work of our journalists is important to our communities in South Florida and the Phoenix metro area, please help us by making your voice loud and clear to the management of Voice Media Group.

We thank you dearly for your support.

We demand that Voice Media Group give the journalists of the Phoenix New Times and Miami New Times a fair contract with reasonable wages and benefits.

These journalists work tirelessly, on a shrinking staff, to cover their communities. They keep the public informed, hold the powerful to account, and provide sharp and insightful content about arts, culture and politics that can't be found anywhere else.

But they are doing this without the support they need from Voice Media Group. Their salaries are not sufficient to keep up with the rising costs of living in Phoenix and Miami. Annual raises have not come close to matching inflation. And the company has insisted on policies that effectively make them at-will workers.

Meanwhile, the company's two-week paid parental leave policy is an embarrassment. It's the wrong way to attract and keep talented journalists — and it's just plain wrong. It’s unfair to journalists who work hard to cover their communities while trying to raise families and pay the bills.

In signing this petition, we’re demanding that Voice Media Group support journalists who want fair compensation and benefits to provide high-quality coverage of the Phoenix and Miami communities.
