We call on British broadcasters to refer to Hizballah as “terrorists”

On 8th October – one day after Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel in which nearly 1,200 people were murdered and 253 were taken hostage – Hizballah launched rockets from Lebanon into the world’s only Jewish state. According to Hizballah, this was purportedly done “in solidarity” with Gaza.

At that stage, however, no fighting had taken place in Gaza. The only combat was within Israel’s internationally-recognised borders, which Hamas had invaded and where it was slaughtering Israeli civilians.

Like Hamas, Hizballah is a proscribed antisemitic genocidal terror group. But you wouldn’t know this from Britain’s broadcasters.

In 2019, following a gruelling effort over several years by Campaign Against Antisemitism and our allies, Hizballah was proscribed in full by the Conservative-led British Government. The so-called military wing of the organisation – the wing responsible for the rockets fired on 8th October and on a daily basis since then – had already been proscribed a decade earlier by the previous Labour Government.

Hizballah’s long-time Secretary-General, Hassan Nasrallah, previously said: “If Jews all gather in Israel, it will save us the trouble of going after them worldwide.”

Hizballah has been true to its mission, bombing Jewish targets from Buenos Aires to Burgas, and it has been accused of setting off bombs in London outside buildings used by Jews and Israelis.

Our broadcasters are stubbornly failing to describe Hizballah in legally accurate terms. Using any other descriptor risks legitimising or downplaying the actions and rhetoric of this and other terror groups. British Jews should be able to expect better from our media.

We are calling on BBC, Sky News, ITV, Channel 4 and all other broadcasters to call Hizballah what they are; terrorists.

So far, the only mainstream television broadcaster to label Hizballah as ‘terrorists’ is GB News.

Other broadcasters must now follow suit.
