We Demand Safe Staffing for Orthopedic Technologists

Kaiser Leadership: Lloyd (Bo) Lockhart

Orthopedic Technologists(OT) are facing incredible challenges, particularly with short staffing and over work. We are signing this petition to demand that Kaiser ensure adequate staffing of all OT positions, to create a clear backfilling plan, and to reinstate after-hours calls to OTs who can meet the needs of the departments.

We, the undersigned, are writing to express our deep concern regarding the ongoing challenges faced by Orthopedic Technologists (OTs) at Kaiser Permanente facilities. It has come to our attention that due to chronic understaffing and the absence of backfill positions, OTs are being increasingly overburdened. Recently, we were alarmed to learn that all after-hours call responsibilities are being reassigned to Emergency Room Technicians (ER Techs), who are neither properly trained nor qualified to handle the specialized tasks typically managed by Orthopedic Technicians.

Orthopedic Technologists play a critical role in providing high-quality care, including the application and removal of casts, splints, and other orthopedic devices, as well as assisting in the management of musculoskeletal injuries. Their unique skill set, honed through specific training and years of experience, ensures patient safety and optimal outcomes. Unfortunately, this essential role is being undermined by the redistribution of tasks to ER Techs, whose scope of practice does not extend to the complexities involved in orthopedic care.

This change not only places an unfair and unsafe burden on ER Techs, but it also puts patient care at risk. The reassignment of after-hours calls, without the necessary expertise, compromises the level of care our patients have come to expect from Kaiser Permanente.

We respectfully request that Kaiser Permanente take immediate action to:

1. Ensure adequate staffing of Orthopedic Technologists , with a clear plan for backfilling positions to prevent chronic understaffing in this crucial department.
2. Reinstate after-hours calls to qualified Orthopedic Technologists who are specifically trained to handle the demands of orthopedic care.

The safety and well-being of patients should always be our top priority, and maintaining the integrity of specialized roles like Orthopedic Technologists is essential for achieving that goal. We urge you to act swiftly to address this situation, ensure proper staffing, and uphold the standards of care that Kaiser Permanente has always strived to provide.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. We trust that you will make the right decision to support both the professionals who serve our community and the patients who rely on their expertise.
