We support Hillman City Neighborhood Center

The Seattle City Council

We support a more affordable, inclusive, and sustainable Hillman City Neighborhood

Seattle is in a housing crisis. For the past 20 years, the city's housing supply has lagged behind its rapid job and population growth. The resulting housing shortage has sent home prices through the roof and made most of the city unaffordable for the average person. This year, we have the unique opportunity to change this.

State law mandates that the city develop a new growth strategy, the Comprehensive Plan. This plan is a roadmap for how the city will grow and invest in its communities over the next 20 years and beyond.

The current proposal includes the establishment of 30 Neighborhood Centers, where increased density would be permitted. These centers are strategically located in areas with shops and amenities, enabling more people to live close to their daily needs and jobs. Introducing diverse housing types in these centers would make them more affordable for the average Seattleite and support strong and diverse communities.

Anti-housing activists are lobbying elected officials to prevent this needed affordable housing from being allowed in our neighborhood. Enough is enough. We need to design a Seattle with all residents in mind and grow to meet the demands of our city.

Sign our petition to let your representative know that you support the proposed Hillman City Neighborhood Center (Council District 2).

In addition to signing this petition, please consider reaching out to your council members: AlexisMercedes.Rinck@seattle.gov , and Sara.Nelson@seattle.gov.

Also, consider attending and speaking at the public hearing for these changes!

That public hearing is at City Hall, February 5th at 5:00 PM.

We the undersigned, strongly support the proposed Hillman City Neighborhood Center, as described in the proposed One Seattle Growth Plan. This neighborhood center will help our community grow in a sustainable, affordable and more inclusive way.

Seattle residents are experiencing incredible stress when it comes to housing availability and affordability due to years of disinvestment in communities that need it most. It is estimated that an additional 112,000 homes are needed in Seattle by 2044. To be able to keep up with the growing population coming into Seattle, we must be bold in our decisions and maintain the neighborhood centers outlined in the One Seattle Growth Plan.

The Neighborhood Center proposed in the Hillman City Neighborhood would allow for more people to live within walking distance to neighborhood shops, restaurants on Rainier Avenue, and Seward Park, which has been an area in the city that has not been accessible to live due to historical racist redlining. By allowing more people to thrive in this neighborhood, we can work to alleviate the harms caused by our past decision. A Neighborhood Center in Hillman City would be an asset to the community for generations to come.

The creation of a neighborhood center will spur additional investments in our community and help us create ample amenities and opportunities for current and future residents.

Opponents of increased density don't offer any tangible solutions to our housing crisis, leaving our community yearning for actionable strategies.

We want a bold vision for Seattle’s future—one that embraces growth, sustainability, and equity. By supporting the Hillman City Neighborhood Center, we can build a city that not only addresses the housing crisis but does so in a manner that respects our environment and fosters thriving communities.

We urge our city council to embrace this bold vision with us. Together, we can create a Seattle that is resilient and affordable for all.
