How YOU can close the spousal rape loophole

Six disabled people of color smile and pose in front of a concrete wall. Five people stand in the back, with a Black woman in the center holding up a chalkboard sign reading "disabled and here." A South Asian person in a wheelchair sits in front.

We need your support for SB 258 to close the last spousal rape loophole in California law—one that allows the rape of a spouse who is unable to consent due to a severe disability. Thanks to your support, we are thrilled to report that we won our Senate Floor vote 37-0, but our toughest fight is still ahead of us in the Assembly.

Right now, we aren’t even guaranteed that our bill will get a hearing. You heard that right—despite passing two Senate Committees unanimously and our Floor vote 37-0, we can be stopped dead right now by the Public Safety Committee—which is comprised of 7 men and 2 women. Women don’t have a right to be heard on whether or not disabled women who get raped by their husbands have a right to any justice. Women are sick and tired of being silenced. Enough is enough.

We need to make our voices heard. We don’t have millions of dollars to siphon into dark money super PACs or expensive lobbyists, but we do have you.

We’re launching an all-hands-on-deck grassroots lobbying campaign to demand action from the Assembly. Based on our research, we believe that the best ways to publicly demand action are by email, phone, and strategic targeted social media.

Please take our action survey and let us know if you are a constituent of the CA Public Safety Committee Chair and which platforms you are willing to help advocate for SB 258 on?

We’ve already won in the Senate, help us win in the Assembly, and get the job done.
