Every year, millions of donkeys are caught up in a brutal global trade driven by the demand for ejiao, a gelatine made by boiling donkey skin. Traders scour rural areas looking for animals to buy or steal, tearing them away from the families who rely on them for farming, transport, and survival. Once taken, these gentle animals are forced into a pipeline of suffering that ends in slaughter. Around 5.9 million donkeys are killed every year to feed this trade.

The cruelty begins long before the slaughterhouse. Donkeys are crammed into trucks and transported for days across borders without food, water, or veterinary care. Many collapse from exhaustion, dehydration, or injuries during the journey. Others die before they even reach their final destination. Those who survive arrive terrified, weakened, and already suffering from severe neglect.

At the slaughter sites, the suffering continues. Donkeys are handled roughly, forced through chaotic holding areas, and killed so their skins can be stripped and boiled to produce ejiao products sold in cosmetics, supplements, and traditional remedies.
