NH Peace Action is excited to welcome special guest speaker Khury Petersen-Smith!

Strategies for Dismantling the War Machine

How can we stop the current U.S. supported violence in the world in the context of the ongoing Trump/Pentagon onslaught? Khury will discuss strategies we can use to end the Iran War, the Gaza genocide, the air strikes in the Caribbean, and strategies for dismantling the whole machine. In that context, we'll also look at the bigger questions about militarism and democracy.

Khury Petersen-Smith is the Michael Ratner Middle East Fellow and the Co-Director of the New Internationalism Project at IPS. He researches U.S. empire, borders, and migration and strategizes with activists to work against the violence that the U.S. carries out and supports around the world. Khury focuses especially on U.S. militarism in the Middle East and in the Pacific, and movements that resist it. He graduated from the Clark University Graduate School of Geography in Massachusetts, after completing a dissertation on U.S. military bases in the Pacific. He is one of the co-authors and organizers of the 2023 Black Voices for Ceasefire statement, which was signed by over 6,000 Black activists, artists, and scholars.

There will be ample opportunity for discussion and Q&A.

Karina Quintans will receive the David Van Strien Award. David was passionate about justice, and was a tireless activist for Palestinian human rights, and Karina has shown that same passionwith her outstanding work toward peace and justice in the Middle East. That work includes her extended trip to Palestine to meet with leaders and organizations in Hebron, Bethlehem and Jerusalem, the relationships she's built with Dar Alhurriya, The Palestine House of Freedom, and the opportunities she has initiated to educate the people of NH, especially our legislators, on the reality of life in Palestine.

David Detour will be the recipient of the Lois Booth Award. Lois was one of the founders of New Hampshire Peace Action and was the driving force behind its work and growth over many years. David was chosen for this award due to his outstanding dedicated volunteerism for the cause of peace with justice. This includes his work with Southern NH Indivisible, the NH Coalition for Just Peace in the Middle East (taking on many projects!), as well as being an active Peacekeeper.

Megan Chapman will receive the Macy Morse Award. Macy was a NH activist for more than 60 years, particularly involved in direct protest in the peace and anti-nuclear movements. Macy's activism included at least 10 arrests and four jail stints for acts of nonviolent civil disobedience. Megan was chosen to be the recipient of this award for her courageous non-violent action and leadership with the ICE out of Pease campaign, her hands-on, direct on the ground work in Nigeria with villages facing eviction, joining the hunger strike for Palestine last year, and for breathing new life in the Mt Washington Valley Resistance.
