Welcome! We are glad to have you join an international family of Black people, queer people, and allies coming together to give our attention to LGBTI people in Uganda and the issues they are facing.
Children of the Sun Foundation (COSF) Uganda operates as a clinic and shelter in Uganda. They serve people of all sexual orientations and gender identities, especially LGBTI people.
They have endured a litany of threats, discrimination, violence, and government oppression. In 2020, a mob of government officers led by the mayor of Kampala, the capital of Uganda, raided the shelter and verbally and psychologically abused and humiliated, violently brutalized, and imprisoned shelter residents and staff. Since they were released, staff and residents have still struggled to get by. They still face threats and violence. They have had to relocate their clinic, and now need our help to relocate their shelter to a safe place.
In addition to these ongoing struggles, the government of Uganda has been cracking down and shutting down organizations fighting for LGBTI rights. On August 3, 2022, the National Bureau for NGOs shut down Sexual Minorities Uganda, the most prominent advocacy organization for LGBTI people in Uganda. This is even beyond the legal reach of the colonial, anti-sodomy penal code, which carries a punishment up to life in prison. Metaphorically speaking, in the United States and other free nations, this would be like organizations being shut down and individuals being attacked for merely having and advocating for a specific position on abortion or any kind of human right.
Your support is critical to the safety of these human beings and to the furtherance of equality for LGBTI people in Uganda.
Please consider donating via Bitcoin which is a secure way to make the greatest impact while avoiding the exploitation and discrimination of banks, payment processors (Stripe), and remittance services (Western Union). Companies and organizations that offer fundraising platforms like GoFundMe, Facebook, and many others also discriminate against Africa, especially marginalized groups. Despite allowing fundraisers in many nations, they do not allow fundraisers in any nations in Africa. They exclude people and organizations in Africa from accessing financial support from people in the wealthiest nations without a custodian in one of these wealthy nations starting the fundraiser.
