Reinstate Indigenous Peoples' Day in Philadelphia
📣 What Happend
On August 6, 2025, we received devastating news: the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court overturned former Mayor Kenny's 2021 executive order that replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The ruling (No. 516 C.D. 2023) stated that only the City Council has the authority to establish or rename official city holidays. As a result, Columbus Day has been reinstated. (Inquirer / Fox29). While the ruling changed the legal process, it did not change the purpose and momentum of Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Philadelphia.
🧡 Why It Matters
Indigenous Peoples’ Day matters because it reflects whether Philadelphia is willing to tell the full truth about our history—not symbolically, but in how we govern, educate, and remember. This is a defining moment. Philadelphia must choose a path forward grounded in historical accuracy, community values, and respect for all Indigenous peoples who continue to live and contribute here today.
This movement cannot be ignored. Hundreds of organizations, businesses, and individuals across the city already observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day every second Monday of October, and the movement is larger nationwide. The people are already leading—now our city must act.
➡️ Moving Forward
Since the ruling, we have been actively meeting with City Council members to build a path forward and build stronger collaboration for a more inclusive Philadelphia. Our commitment to this cause predates the court ruling, and it will not conclude here. What has changed is our strategic direction, and we are resolutely dedicated to advancing this journey together.
This movement cannot be ignored. When we stand together, change becomes inevitable.
If you live, work, or study in Philadelphia, now is the time to make your voice heard.
We are ready to organize—together.
