DSA-NYC’s Debt & Finance Working Group October general meeting takes the form of a teach-in, joining our ongoing series of fall seminars to introduce, explain, and set out the challenges of the debt and finance issues we face as socialists.
The topic is:
Public Banking: How To Defeat Wall Street and Democratize Finance in New York
on
Wednesday October 28 at 7:00 p.m.
The teach-in will cover the role of banks in our economy, explain how banks control government's ability to finance its expenditures, and lay out what that means for us as socialist organizers. It will trace the damage wrought by Wall Street banks' monopoly on the provision of credit, make the case that we should build public infrastructure for banking, and draw on theory and working models around the world to show how public banks are a common-sense, democratic solution to a number of long-standing social and political problems. We'll conclude by discussing the campaign for public banks here in New York and highlight how you can get involved.
To attend, please sign up to this event and we will send you the Zoom details.
The additional sessions are:
| Teach-in subject | Date | RSVP |
| Personal Debt & Debt Strikes (with the Debt Collective) | November 11 | RSVP here |
| Gentrification, Land Value & Property Taxes | November 18 | RSVP here |
| City & State Budget | December 2 | RSVP here |
These teach-ins will be accessible for those of us with no background in debt or finance. They will challenge us all to think about the structures and goals of our campaigns.
Everyone is welcome - newbies and seasoned working group members alike! This is the place for questions you haven’t been able to ask elsewhere. Each teach-in will make it clear where you can get involved, no matter your background.
We look forward to seeing you there!
Solidarity,
Debt & Finance Working Group
