7th Annual Zachary Bear Heels Prayer Walk
Saturday, June 1, 2024
2:00 PM - 6:00 PM
2:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Starting Point: 1601 Jackson Street, Omaha
Zachary Bear Heels (Sicangu Lakota and Kiowa) was brutally murdered by Omaha police on June 5, 2017. He was an innocent man that was simply lost in Omaha and in need of help. He was in need of mental health care and was not a danger to anyone around him. Instead of being protected and served, he was viciously murdered by four police officers. True justice was never carried out as the police officers that murdered him were never incarcerated and, in fact, three were re-hired by the Omaha police force after being fired. The fourth police officer was charged with second-degree assault and use of a weapon, but was later acquitted. Zachary’s mother later received a legal settlement from the city but it was not near what what the city should have provided to the family. No justice was served, therefore there is no peace.
The family of Zachary Bear Heels, Omaha community members and the larger Indigenous community will continue to walk the same route that Zachary took that day and demand true justice for this racist crime against an innocent, young Indigenous man.
