Georgetown Youth Justice Action Month - Free Minds Write Night
Start: Tuesday, October 08, 2019• 4:30 PM
End: Tuesday, October 08, 2019• 6:30 PM
YJAM was inspired by the advocacy of Tracy McClard, the mother of an incarcerated child who raised public awareness about the injustice of the criminal and juvenile legal systems. Led by the Campaign for Youth Justice, what began in 2008 as a 5K race in Missouri has evolved into a nationally-recognized month dedicated to shedding light on an issue that impacts nearly 200,000 youth each year.
On October 7th, 8th, and 10th, the Georgetown Juvenile Justice Initiative will host 3 evenings of events, themed Act, Inspire, Lead: Transforming Youth Justice as part of our Youth Justice Action month celebration. These events will inspire advocacy and activism in youth justice, amplify the voices of youth activists, and educate attendees on the work of local organizations to protect the rights of youth.
Tuesday, October 8th:
A Write Night with Free Minds Books Club and Writing Workshop. We will be joined by Free Minds Staff and Poet Ambassadors who will partner with participants to provide feedback on the writings of Book Club members who are still incarcerated.
Poet ambassadors are members who have returned home after being incarcerated and are giving back through the “On the Same Page: Free Minds Poetry in the Community and the Classroom initiative in DC". Participants will have an opportunity to support members’ processes of self-awareness and change.
Refreshments will be provided. Join us!
