Tell the City of Flagstaff to Stick to the Regional Plan

Start: Friday, July 07, 202309:00 AM

End: Friday, July 07, 202303:00 PM

Join North Arizona Climate Change Alliance (NAZCCA) as we urge City Hall to demand an end to fossil fuels and improve the health of all citizens.

We are currently pushing for:

The Northern Arizona Healthcare (NAH) proposal lacks sustainability and carbon footprint aspects. We must urge Mayor and Council members to add three critical elements to the NAH Development Agreement (DA). Council needs to add the following to the DA:

  1. LEED Carbon Zero Certification is not in the plan, and NAH saying they “may” seek certification in five years is impossible. LEED certification has many prerequisites, even in the planning stages (see attached spreadsheet). So NAH claiming they will seek this in five years is completely disingenuous. In the DA, NAH must say in definite terms that they will seek LEED Platinum level from the start of the project.
  2. Public Transportation – NAH has shown no concern about the carbon footprint of all the new transportation that will result from moving to the edge of town. They propose a shuttle to run to the Walmart parking lot. This is not good enough. How will Mountain Line pay for the additional bus routes required? If NAH had any concerns about its carbon footprint, they would include the purchase of two new electric buses for Mountain Line to cover these new routes. In the DA, NAH must say they will purchase these buses for Mountain Line before the hospital opens for business.
  3. Public Housing – the high cost of housing in Flagstaff is largely caused by home purchases and weekend rental pressures from Central Arizona.

This will only worsen as climate change drives temperatures ever higher in Central Arizona. Hotels at the new location will not solve this crisis. Adding a few ‘affordable housing units at the new location will also not solve our housing crisis. Suppose NAH wants to have a significant effect on our housing crisis. In that case, NAH must commit to forty or more percent affordable housing at the new location and the redevelopment of the old location. In the DA, NAH must say in definite terms that they will commit to more affordable housing in both locations.

There are several steps to getting involved as Signature Collectors:

  1. Sign yourself up on the collector's schedule: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1a33OvAwlDEo_MkK55aP2U7Hw9sbWSP3d-YgPqSE_saA/edit?userstoinvite=zadyboyz@gmail.com&actionButton=1#gid=844523187
  2. Read the attached talking points. We want to approach signers neutrally (tier I) but be able to address concerns they might bring up (tier III). NAH Petition Talking Points
  3. Come to the protest next Saturday at City Hall from 11-2:00. Spread the attached flyer to everyone you know. Use the flyer you think works best.
    1. Stick to the Plan Flyer
    2. End the Era of Fossil Fuels Flyer

If you know others interested in helping, we would like to recruit an additional 50 signature collectors. Please send their name, phone, and e-mail to me at Stefan.Sommer@nau.edu. Please contact me with any questions, and feel free to share my contact information with any recruits.

Speak at the next Council meeting and send your comments to:  Council@flagstaffaz.gov.
