The DSA Green New Deal Working Group, Greater Greater Washington, and Amalgamated Transit Union 689 are teaming up for a happy hour to mark the changeover to Metro's New Bus Network on June 29th, when all bus routes are being renamed, rerouted, and rescheduled, as well as the launch of our campaign to establish a progressive source of revenue for sustaining WMATA's operations for the next generation. Come hang out June 29th at MetroBar, socialize with friends from across the DMV as we call on our leaders to....

Tax Land, Fund Metro, Build Housing!

Priorities

Tax Land. Our main priority is to introduce a land value tax across the DMV. A land value tax is applied to the land surrounding transit stations, the value of which is greatly increased by the presence of transit stations. A land value tax is more progressive than a general property tax and would reduce average burdens on low-income and middle-income households.

Fund Metro. A land value tax would be used to provide sustainable funding for the regional public transit system. A dedicated source of operating funding would help end the cycle of budget crises within the regional public transit system and allow for investments to improve the system for the long term.

Build Housing. A land value tax would place financial pressure on landowners to develop land surrounding transit stations, lessening the impact of the regional housing crisis.

Next Steps

Connection.  The Tax Land, Fund Metro, Build Housing Campaign is hosted in Metro DC DSA's Green New Deal Working Group. Sign our petition to receive email updates. Reach out MDCDSATransit@gmail.com to join the email list for news, discussion and events. DSA Members can join #Public-Transit and #Green-New-Deal in Slack to get involved.

Education. Throughout July-October, the Tax Land, Fund Metro, Build Housing Campaign will be hosting a series of educational talks throughout the region on the governance, history, and current state of our regional public transit system. Join us for our first event, a Socialist Night School on the History of Transit in the DMV, coming soon.

Action. This summer, we’ll be focusing our attention on DMVMoves, the task force responsible for recommending regional public transit funding policies. Sign the petition calling on DMVMoves to recommend a regional Land Value Tax to fund Metro. In addition to petitioning task force members, we’ll be packing the room at DMVMoves’ Fall 2025 meeting.

We will be located in a wheelchair accessible outdoor area, or in a covered area in case of rain.
