2020 is a critical year for climate action. As we approach the US elections and the consequences of climate change are becoming ever more clear and dire with each passing day, a new powerful wave of the climate movement has been swelling. Young people around the world have been rising up to defend our future, and have been going on strike — every week, all over the planet — for months. On September 20, 2019, and again on November 29 and December 6, the adults joined us.

We meant it when we said we are prepared to take the movement to the next level. In Los Angeles, various groups are coming together to collaborate as a movement (MVMT-LA) and to turn the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day into a digital Movement Week of Action, spanning from April 21st – April 24th.

MVMT-LA’s Earth Week is centered around indigenous prayer and we have curated our demands as such.

During Earth Week, people will be participating in a call-in action where they will call the offices of Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Eric Garcetti with a different demand each day.

Participants can text “Earth Week” to 69866 to sign up for direct updates for each day’s call-in actions.

TUESDAY (PRAYER FOR SELF) 4/21: We will start our week of action with a day of reflection and a moment of silence. We encourage everyone to look inward before kicking off our demands.

WEDNESDAY (PRAYER FOR EARTH) 4/22: We will be hosting various actions to target Governor Newsom and Mayor Garcetti on the extraction and abuse or Earth’s natural resources.

    • CALL-IN DEMAND FOR OFFICIALS: Stop drilling for oil and gas in Los Angeles and California by ending new oil and gas permits with a commitment to phase out drilling all together starting with a 2500 foot health and safety buffer zone.

THURSDAY (PRAYER FOR OUR FUTURE) 4/23: We will have a social media campaign targeting JP Morgan Chase to pressure them to divest from funding the deadly industries that are threatening our future.

    • CALL-IN DEMAND FOR OFFICIALS: Usher in a fair and just transition for workers and communities as we accelerate to 100% real, clean energy for Los Angeles and California by 2030.

FRIDAY (PRAYER FOR OUR COMMUNITY) 4/24: We will be hosting teach-ins and educational panels throughout the day.

  • CALL-IN DEMAND FOR OFFICIALS: Put the health of our communities first by making our response to COVID-19 a downpayment for a regenerative economy, and the start of a Real Green New Deal.
