Listening with the Woods
Start: Saturday, August 31, 2024•06:00 PM
Come and join us for a participatory sound experience in the Gwaelod
y Garth Woodland (Coed Rhiw’r Ceiliog) where we’ll create a unique
version of a classic work of sound-art, and create a deep listening
experience with the structure and sounds of the woodland at its heart.
As a group, we're going to create a unique version of a classic work of sound-art - Steve Reich’s 'Pendulum Music' - hanging microphones from the trees in Gwaelod-y-Garth woods. It's a mesmerising piece where the music emerges from swinging microphones interacting with the loudspeakers as they move back and forth. It's a chance to listen deeply to the ever shifting rhythmic patterns the piece creates, with an added spatial element from the unique layout the trees will dictate for us.
Through the listening space that this piece creates in performance, we
will then invite each other to listen further, where space will be given to
the amplified and natural sounds of the woodland.
To finish, we’ll enjoy a drink by a fire as we pack down – BYOB!
Meeting point – Outside Gwaelod y Garth Village Hall at 6pm, leaving at 6.15
Sound Experience – 6.30-10.00pm, the forest school area, Gwaelod y Garth Woods
Drinks by the Fire – 10-11pm
Bring a torch for walking back in the dark
Many thanks to Pentyrch Community Council for giving us permission to run this event.
The session is being led by Nature by the Taff and one of its members: musician/sound artist, Joe Wright.
Here's how the woods can sound in the daytime:
And a more faithful version of Pendulum Music by Steve Reich

In all of his work, he is interested in the ways sound can facilitate a sense of exploration and play in collective experiences. He lives in Gwaelod-y-Garth.
