End: Saturday, April 06, 2024• 2:00 PM
Join Black Lives Matter DC, Stop Police Terror Project, Malcolm X Grassroots Movement - DC Chapter, Pan-African Community Action (PACA), and Civil Rights Corps for a Community Teach-In where we'll break down the new Secure DC law, its impact on our community, and how we can respond.
Too many people are losing their lives, grieving, living with fear and most of us are angry and frustrated. All people deserve safety. Too often, our community is forced to accept the “solutions” those with power and money who are not impacted by continuous community violence make. However, these laws are not working. Laws like Secure DC give communities the illusion of safety, NOT safety. They are almost always more harmful to Black and other marginalized groups but do not make any of us safer. You can not fight violence with violence.
The increase in violence has sparked a backlash against police reform efforts from the 2020 uprisings. Even though these reforms were moderate and unrelated to increased crime, the D.C. government began considering rolling back police accountability changes in 2021. To distract from their failure to reduce violence, blame has been shifted to reform efforts and misleading "defund" rhetoric.
Councilmember Brooke Pinto’s Secure DC Omnibus Amendment Act, also known as "Crimnibus," was introduced as a solution to address crime and violence, a performative action without being concerned with effectiveness.
Pressure from corporations, right-wing entities, the DC Police Union, and affluent individuals has led to the retention of many harmful components, including drug-free zones, anti-mask laws, and fare evasion arrests in the law that will do nothing to make us safee.
