After hearing powerful stories from forty-three constituents last week who are directly affected by the housing crisis and are in strong support of pro-housing bills, Senator Durazo just voted No on SB 79 in the Senate Housing Committee. And we are outraged.
During the Senate Housing Committee hearing on SB 79, she repeated the old NIMBY tropes that her "concern is that there would be more market rate at the expense of affordable housing” and SB 79 would “leave the door open to luxury development without low income guarantees”. As if allowing apartment buildings in multi-million-dollar single-family neighborhoods won't enable more affordable housing, let alone the fact that we know building more market-rate housing reduces rents for everyone (and affordability mandates hurt everyone).
But the fight is not over. Next week, she will be voting on SB 79 and other important housing legislation again as Chair of the Senate Local Government Committee.
Join YIMBY Los Angeles in Sen. Durazo's District, where we will lead a group tour of the single-family zoned parking lots and multi-million dollar McMansions within walking distance of the new Wilshire/La Brea D Line Metro station, expected to open later this year.
Media will be present, and we want you to share your housing story as a constituent and expose the hypocrisy of voting against new housing.
See if you're in her current Senate District here, and if you're in LA County Supervisor District 1, which she is running for in 2026, here.
Let's fight for an affordable future in California! Thank you so much for your activism.
