Stand Against Hate with La Mesa Spring Valley School District

Start: Tuesday, September 12, 2023 6:00 PM

Recently, a group of parents in the La Mesa Spring Valley School District, dubbing themselves "Parents of Murdock Students", have been up in arms about the social emotional curriculum used in the district. These parents are affiliated with members of the Proud Boys and they are organizing a public comment storm for the Tuesday, September 12th board meeting.

The School District and Governing Board are supporting their curriculum and their decision to teach social emotional learning and wellness. Meanwhile these parents are "outraged" and want it removed from classrooms. As is always the case, per California Education Code § 51101, if they don't like the curriculum, they can opt their own children out. They don't get to decide what is best for everyone's children.

Here is where our request gets tricky... Ready for it.

Public comment can be made via this Zoom link: https://lmsvsd-net.zoom.us/j/86257652068. We have a simultaneous action in Grossmont Union High School District. If you choose, you can do both this way.

BUT... if you are able, please consider showing up in person. There will be Law Enforcement presence and, as much as possible, it is important to stand up to the hate groups plaguing East County. They need to see our ally's standing against their white supremacy.

For everyone’s safety, please be sure not to walk to your vehicle alone.

Please wear white to the La Mesa meeting because we are going to ask you to head over to the Grossmont Board Meeting after the other group of parents leave.

Thank you for your activism and courage.

Talking Points

  • Thank you for supporting student mental health and social emotional learning.
  • If these other parents don't want their children to learn the curriculum, it is their right under California Ed Code 51101 to opt out of it.
  • These parents don't get to decide what is best for everyone's children. We have the right and freedom to parent our own children and we support social emotional learning.
