This public debate will bring together experts Prof Rupert Read and Dr Jake Newman, and an audience of community voices to address two of the most pressing challenges of our century: the existential risks posed by artificial intelligence and climate change, and the adaptive measures humanity must take to navigate them wisely. The event will not only explore the dangers but also the opportunities for building resilience and steering society toward a more sustainable and ethical future.

Dr Jake Newman is a Lecturer in the School of Computing Sciences at the University of East Anglia, specialising in algorithms and applications of neural networks. He holds a PhD in the identification of spoken language using only the motion of the lips (also known as computer lip-reading), which he obtained from UEA in 2011. He has previously worked in plant development at the John Innes Centre and as a software engineer in the High Performance Computing Department at UEA.

Jake’s research interests span a wide range of applications involving artificial intelligence. His main research focus is a collaboration with the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital to develop a medical device and AI algorithms for diagnosing vertigo. He also works with colleagues in the School of Psychology who use AI to study how infants learn.

Rupert Read is an environmental philosopher, author, co-director of the Climate Majority Project and Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the University of East Anglia. His books include This Civilisation is Finished, Why Climate Breakdown Matters and Transformative Adaptation - Another world is still just possible.
