On January 24, 2026, Alex Jeffrey Pretti — a 37-year-old United States citizen, ICU nurse at the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital, federal worker, and member of AFGE Local 3669 — was fatally shot by federal immigration enforcement agents during a DHS operation in Minneapolis, MN. Alex’s death is not only a tragedy for his family and community — this is the killing of a fellow federal worker and union sibling by federal agents operating with congressional funding and minimal accountability.

As our constitutional rights continue to be challenged, our actions now will determine whether we can continue to exercise those rights in the future. Alex Pretti sought to protect the vulnerable, whether as an ICU nurse at the VA or a good Samaritan in his community.
