Explore the complexities of effective communication of weather and climate science to diverse, cross-generational audiences. This presentation will draw from insights on science communication, cognitive psychology, and media studies to highlight why scientific facts alone often fail to change perceptions or behavior. The presentation will highlight key barriers--such as misinformation, cognitive biases, and tribalism--and present strategic ideas to make climate and weather messages more engaging and actionable without sacrificing the science.
Mike started his meteorology-focused career at the Mount Washington Observatory, where he observed, studied, and endured the world-renowned extreme weather at the summit of Mount Washington, NH. After 10 years of mountaintop forecasting and research, his passion for science led him to a small start-up nonprofit dedicated to STEM education and science communication for northern New England youth. Back at the Observatory in a new role as of 2024, he continues to focus on weather, climate, and science communication and is a fervent member of the scientific skeptic community.
