Millionaires and billionaires have never had it so good. According to new data, billionaire wealth in the U.S. now tops $7.6 trillion. Meanwhile, 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck.

In the 1960s and 70s, CEOs made roughly 20 to 30 times more than their workers. Today, CEOs of major corporations are making 290 times that of their average worker.

Tesla is on the cusp of approving a nearly $1 trillion compensation package for Elon Musk -- already the richest man in the world.

Last year, the CEO of Walmart made $274 million -- 930 times that of the median Walmart worker who makes $29,469. The CEO of Coca-Cola made $28 million last year -- 1,980 times that of the average worker who makes $14,144.

Starbucks' CEO made $95.8 million in 2024. The typical Starbucks worker would have to work 6,600 years to make that amount.

Sixty-two percent of Americans are in favor of putting a cap on CEO pay, relative to worker pay. And Rashida Tlaib and Bernie Sanders' new bill, encourages corporations to do just that. Even Pope Leo agrees:

Tweet from: Rashida Tlaib: Amo @BernieSanders, I think Pope Leo is endorsing our new bill. -- Sen. Bernie Sanders: The Pope is exactly right. No society can survive when one man becomes a trillionaire while the vast majority struggle to just survive — trying to put food on the table, pay rent and afford health care.

The Tax Excessive CEO Pay Act would tax corporations whose CEO-to-worker pay ratio exceeds 50 times that of worker pay.

50-to-1 = 0.5% tax increase

100-to-1 = 1% tax increase

200-to-1 = 2% tax increase

300-to-1 = 3% tax increase

400-to-1 = 4% tax increase

500-to-1 = 5% tax increase

If Tesla's board approves Elon Musk's $975 billion compensation package, under this bill, Tesla would owe up to $100 billion more in taxes over the next decade.

Upon introduction of the bill, Senator Bernie Sanders said:

“We can no longer tolerate a rigged economy that enables the richest man in the world, Elon Musk, to become the first trillionaire while 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and millions work longer hours for lower wages.”

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib said:

“It’s disgraceful that corporations continue to rake in record profits by exploiting the labor of their workers. Every worker deserves a living wage and human dignity on the job.”
