Fatima is fighting for a California where we all belong
Fatima Iqbal-Zubair is a public school teacher, mother to a child with autism, immigrant, and Muslim running for California State Assembly in District 64. Fatima is running because we can't wait. While she never expected to run for public office, she was frustrated by the way politicians consistently valued profits over people, and she had to act. She believes in a people-powered, participatory government that centers our voices and embraces the truth that we all belong. She is a champion for Medicare for All, environmental reform that guarantees clean air & water for our communities, universal childcare and free 4-year college tuition, a just economy and fair wages, affordable housing for all, and a criminal justice system that truly promotes community healing and accountability by investing in alternatives to incarceration.
As a young person, Fatima's family fled war in the Middle East and immigrated to the US. As a Muslim, immigrant, and woman of color, Fatima learned early on what it felt like to not fit in and experienced many incidences of hate. Yet she also experienced the power that comes when we join together and claim our belonging, and that journey led her to become a teacher, community activist, and to eventually run for office.
For decades, communities across South Los Angeles have worked to create local solutions that address the deep injustice and inequity they see in their community. They have done this with patience, love, and as a service to their community- but it shouldn’t be their job alone. Our government isn't doing enough: corporate wealth is being valued over our belonging as we are constantly denied healthy neighborhoods, good schools, jobs, and healthcare. This is not right: we deserve a California where we can all belong and thrive. It’s time for government to listen, act, and elevate these voices for change. We can't wait.
It's time that we have representatives who will center our voices to create a California where we can all thrive. Fatima is running to bring our community's voice to Sacramento, and she's doing it with a people-powered campaign. She has taken the No Fossil Fuel Money Pledge, Homes Guarantee Pledge, and accepts $0 from corporate PACs. She is running against an incumbent who accepts thousands from corporate interests like big oil and police PACs and who repeatedly votes against the interests of his community.
