Our government has money for war and genocide, and money for agents to kill, abduct, and detain us—but not money to feed or house us, or to cover our healthcare.
All of this money is taxpayers’ money. It belongs to us. But we’ve been watching a massive transfer of wealth from the people to billionaires and corporations.
This has reached new heights with a corrupt billionaire as president. Trump’s net worth has grown by over $4 billion in the past year. He made the largest cuts to Medicaid and food assistance in history, while using the presidency to enrich himself, his billionaire allies, and the corporate donors who spent millions on his campaign.
From the private prison/detention and fossil fuel industry to corporations involved in militarized violence, surveillance, and polluting technology—these donors have seen huge returns on their investments: On average, for every million they spent, they gained around $18 billion.
Many of these industries also donate to members of Congress on both sides of the aisle. That’s why people in power keep giving our public taxpayer money to those at the top, rather than our communities’ needs.
So Rep. Rashida Tlaib just introduced the Defund the Oligarchs, Fund Our Communities resolution to demand Congress end the system of subsidies, tax breaks, and federal contracts for billionaire and corporate donors. That system enables fascism and oligarchy, not democracy.
Her new resolution calls on Congress to tax the ultra-rich and reinvest that money into our communities’ needs—such as housing, healthcare, and education.
She introduced it alongside co-leads Reps. Pramila Jayapal and Delia Ramirez, as well as advocacy organizations.
