On Saturday February 25, 2023 BLM DC is hosting a Family Reunion to celebrate the release of our 2020 and 2021 Impact Report.
The fierce urgency of resistance ignited during the 2020 uprisings meant many BLM Chapters like ours who have always raised funds on their own (not from the national BLM organization) saw an influx of donations.
Our chapter was clear, that money was THE PEOPLE'S money.
We were intentional about redistributing those resources to Black folks and Black Communities in DC. We were also able to support our direct actions, coalition building and organizing against state violence and for Black Liberation.
Donations do not last for ever, but the work is not finished and we need your help.
Black Lives Matter DC (BLMDC) joined ten other chapters (the #BLM10) in making the tough decision to break away from Black Lives Matter Global Network (BLMGN - the national BLM organization) after our calls for transparency and accountability from leadership since 2016 went unanswered. After our first public statement additional chapters and entities joined us and we became the BLM 10 Plus and released a second statement. While millions of dollars have been donated to BLMGN, most chapters have received little to no financial support since the launch in 2013. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts people still believe we are the same organization and it has seriously impacted our chapter's ability to fundraise and continue to do this work. As chapters, we raise our own funds in order to be able to continue the work we do in our own cities.
The Family Reunion is a chance for folks to learn more about BLM DC's impact, plug into our work, and share in some joy together. It is also about raising funds so that we can continue to organize, empower others, support new leaders, build collective power, embody mutual aid and grow our organization.
Please donate, become a recurring donor, encourage others to do the same, and share our fundraiser far and wide.
In Solidarity,
Black Lives Matter DC
