Introduced by Rep. Cicilline & Sen. Merkley, this bill prohibits discrimination based on sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity in areas including public accommodations and facilities, education, federal funding, employment, housing, credit, and the jury system.
Specifically, the bill defines and includes sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity among the prohibited categories of discrimination or segregation.
As stated by the Human Rights Campaign, "There are two areas of civil rights law that do not currently prohibit sex discrimination...all federally funded programs and public spaces and services. The Equality Act adds sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity to these sections of the Civil Rights Act. The law covering public spaces and services is also sorely outdated, and the Equality Act updates that law to strengthen protections for everyone."
H.R. 5, the Equality Act bill in the House, passed Thursday (2/26) in a 224-206 vote. S. 393, the Senate version, has 48 cosponsors, with none of them being Republicans. To pass the Senate, the bill must receive 10 Republican votes to beat back a filibuster. The Equality Act faces an uphill battle in the Senate. We need your financial support to fight for it.
