Since 2020, our program “We Keep Us Joyful” has provided D.C. families, especially those navigating the loss of a loved one to police or intracommunity violence, with rent assistance, groceries, utilities, transportation, and holiday gift cards. These families are part of our extended BLM DC Family, connected to us through shared struggle, grief, and care.
Right now, funds for this year’s holiday support do not yet meet the rapidly growing need. Independent donations have already covered some of our needs, but to fully support our families, we need to raise additional funds. In D.C., tens of thousands of families, mostly Black families, are facing deep financial hardship and uncertainty as the cost of living continues to rise while wages do not, and government funding remains unstable.
We know what that means: families who have already endured unimaginable loss are now struggling just to make ends meet. “We Keep Us Joyful” is one small but powerful way we can show up for them to help with bills, groceries, and gifts, and to remind each other that community care is our greatest strength.
In addition to what we do every year, this year we’re also hosting our first holiday celebration for the families, a love offering to those we hold so dear. It will be a space filled with dinner, music, and a special children’s area, and most importantly, a chance to honor their loved ones and be held deeply in community.
Your contribution will directly support nearly 100 families across D.C. Every dollar goes toward helping families keep their lights on, put food on the table, and celebrate the holidays with dignity, love, and joy.
Join us in keeping D.C. families joyful this season.
