The Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry (SHL) is a nonprofit educational and social association focused on (1) building community for non-religious people in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, (2) practicing secular values through mutual aid and volunteer service, and (3) engaging in activism, particularly around defending the first amendment guarantee of separation of state and church. SHL is a chapter of the American Humanist Association, and affirms the dignity and worth of every human being without discrimination against race, age, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnic origin, nationality or disability.

Founded in 1994, our members are freethinkers of many kinds. We call ourselves atheists, agnostics, skeptics, secular humanists, rationalists, and scientific naturalists. We welcome you and all who are interested in participating in our friendly community. Most events are open to members and non-members alike.

SHL is an all volunteer, member supported organization, primarily funded by membership dues and donations. You can become a dues paying member, renew your membership, or check your membership status through our Member Portal.

You can donate to SHL on our Give Lively Page.
