Tax Land, Fund Metro, Build Housing

We believe it's time for WMATA and its member jurisdictions to prioritize equity, affordability, and sustainability in its transit-oriented development planning. Following the call of Amalgamated Transit Union 689 and the Green New Deal for Housing Campaign, we urge DMVMoves members to move swiftly to implement land value taxation through our “Tax Land, Fund Metro, Build Housing” campaign.

A land value tax applied to the land surrounding transit stations, the value of which increases greatly due to the presence of transit stations, would:

  • Incentivize the development of land near transit stations, lessening the burden of the regional housing crisis
  • Reduce the tax burden on multi-family housing and on low- and middle-income households
  • Provide sustainable funding for the regional transit network through an equitable method
