ACTION: Invest in re-entry housing

What is the problem? The State of Alabama currently provides no re-entry housing support for the vast majority of people who are released from the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC). When people are released from ADOC custody, they are given $10, a bus ticket to the county where they were prosecuted, and the clothes on their back. That’s it.

Why does it matter? Every year, thousands of people are turned out of Alabama’s prisons with no money and nowhere to sleep, shower, cook, or live. It is an obvious, cruel recipe for failure, and lack of housing has been repeatedly identified as the greatest barrier to successful re-entry across the state. As Alabama confronts our prison crisis, making sure that people are positioned to succeed upon release is an important part of the solution.

How can I help? You can use this online portal to send letters to your state legislators urging them to invest in crucial re-entry housing services across Alabama. Once you send those letters, you can share this portal with other people in your community. Lawmakers need to hear from us so that they will make this a priority!
