BACKGROUND

On March 5, Rashid received retaliatory charges for “third-party calls” after exposing abuses at Red Onion State Prison, including self-immolation protests against systemic racism and abusive prison conditions at Red Onion. Prison officials imposed a 45-day phone ban and tried cutting his email (JPAY) access on March 3 to silence his reporting.

This follows increased brutality against whistleblowers like Ekong Eshiet and Demetrius Wallace, who were assaulted and denied communication after they self-immolated to protest the abusive prison conditions. Prison administrators continue lying to families and legislators about prison conditions and have even falsely claimed that there were no self-immolations at the prison.

From Rashid’s call:
“Prison officials barred me from using the telephone for 45 days for speaking about Red Onion, where guys set themselves on fire to protest ongoing abuse. Those who spoke out, like Ekong Eshiet and Demetrius Wallace, were beaten, had their mail destroyed, and lost communication access. They’re now trying to censor my JPAY and extend this retaliation through sham charges.”
