Tell Navy Federal: Refund the $80 million you stole now

From 2017 to 2022, Navy Federal Credit Union charged servicemembers, veterans, and other customers illegal overdraft fees, even when their accounts showed sufficient funds at the time of purchase. It was a deceptive practice that targeted the very people who wear the uniform to protect us.

When the Biden-era CFPB investigated, Navy Federal admitted wrongdoing, agreed to stop, and promised to pay back $80 million to military families. It was accountability in action, until Trump’s CFPB stepped in.

Under Trump’s handpicked CFPB chief, Russell Vought, the consent order requiring Navy Federal to repay its victims was abruptly and quietly terminated. That means the $80 million in refunds, money Navy Federal already admitted it owed, will never reach the pockets of the people it was stolen from. This isn’t justice. It’s corruption, and it sets a dangerous precedent that financial giants can exploit those who serve and walk away clean.

Navy Federal says they “fully cooperated” with the CFPB and “prioritize protecting members.” If that’s true, why not refund the money you agreed to pay? Why hide behind Trump’s CFPB to escape responsibility? This isn’t about legality anymore, it’s about integrity. A financial institution serving the military should lead by example, not dodge its responsibilities when political winds shift.

These overdraft fees were predatory. Millions of dollars were siphoned from the checking accounts of military personnel, veterans, and their families. That money belongs back in their hands. Navy Federal has more than enough assets, $180 billion, to make good on its word. Anything less is a betrayal of those who trusted them.
