Carleton University is enacting a policy that bans departments and student organizations from making public statements on political or social issues.

The so-called “Institutional Impartiality Policy” is being proposed, and would represents the most repressive speech restriction at any Canadian university. It undermines the very foundation of academic freedom.

This is not neutrality. It is authoritarian censorship.

Carleton has initiated consultations (albeit, only after the massive backlash they have received from the community following our campaign), but this is nothing more than a farce. The administration quietly posted it on their website, forcing concerned community members to explicitly go looking for it. It was not announced in any official communication channels.

The policy silences collective expression on Palestine, Indigenous sovereignty, climate justice, and transgender rights while allowing the university to continue taking political positions through its investments, partnerships, and disciplinary actions.
