I  wrote a letter for the Action Network letter campaign: Tell your legislators: Do not cut funding & services for the Pace Fire Rescue District!.

Why is Tallahassee deciding what's best for the communities of the Pace Fire Rescue District especially when our citizens voted twice for a Special District because they wanted better fire protection? Florida House Bill 4051 is set to reduce Pace Fire Rescue District funding by about eight hundred thousand dollars next year. In November of 2025, the communities of the Pace Fire Rescue District became safer when we opened Fire Station 4 on Chumuckla Highway, just north of LEAD Academy and Wallace Lake School, near the soccer fields. Since Station 4 opened, the average response time in that area dropped from 12 minutes and 46 seconds to 7 minutes and 24 seconds. If budget cuts force Station 4 to close, you're not just waiting "a little longer." You could be waiting on average, 5 minutes and 22 seconds longer. And minutes matter. In cardiac arrest, when the heart stops, the American Heart Association says survival drops about 7 to 10 percent per minute without defibrillation, and the goal is early defibrillation within about 3 to 5 minutes. In house fires, research from the UL Fire Safety Research Institute shows modern synthetic furnishings can push rooms into dangerous conditions and be engulfed in just a few minutes, often around 3 to 5 minutes. And the Firefighter Rescue Survey shows house fire survival rates drop from around 80 percent when dispatch time to victim removal is 8 minutes, to 47 percent when it's 20 minutes. Every emergency is different—but the science is consistent: minutes and even seconds matter. HB 4051 risks slower response times and higher risk for the communities of the Pace Fire Rescue District.
