Join the Pirates for the Planet Who are SHUTTING DOWN National Grid's Fracked Gas Storage Facility in Greenpoint, Brooklyn 🏴‍☠️🌎

The Problem

Newtown Creek, the birthplace of the fossil fuel industry, is deeply polluted and poses major ecological, environmental, and economical risk. The situation is perpetuated by National Grid, who owns the most extensive fracked gas facility in New York state, located right here in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. National Grid has been contaminating the water and surrounding land for decades, but refuses to decommission the plant and take responsibility for its damage. The 120-acre site is situated in a high-risk floodplain zone, posing a threat to the community’s health and safety and putting residents, local businesses, and the environment in serious harm, especially as the climate and its subsequent storms worsen. Furthermore, National Grid just submitted a 20-year proposal to maintain the plant’s operations and expand its fracked gas infrastructure. This would violate New York laws and climate goals, as well as exponentially increase resident’s exposure to harmful toxins, while simultaneously raising utility bills. We are demanding the retirement of the facility and for National Grid to clean up its mess. It is time to shut it down, protect our communities, and restore Newtown Creek!

The Solution

We must reclaim the land in our communities and around Newtown Creek that have been stolen and dirtied by exploiters such as National Grid. And it begins with shutting down its Greenpoint facility, a task that requires us to persuade the NYS Public Service Commission (led by Rory Christian, a non-elected official chosen by Governor Hocul) to deny National Grid’s 20-year plan. We have until the beginning of June to garner enough community support to showcase the public’s concern and desire for the retirement of the site and a phased transition to clean, renewable alternatives. We are aiming for 13K signatures and comments, and more importantly, for creative envisioning from local residents on the possible transformation of this 120-acre parcel of land and how we can collectively shape the sustainable future of Brooklyn’s fossil fuel legacy.
