In June, the Public Service Commission rejected Washington Gas’ PROJECTpipes 3 proposal  for pipe replacements that threaten the integrity of D.C.'s climate goals. Now, Washington Gas is back with an updated plan, misleading renamed “District SAFE” to improve their image—when we know the gas in those pipes is NOT SAFE. Toxins released in our homes from gas burning-appliances increase the risk for asthma and other health harms. Leaking methane traps heat in the atmosphere, along with CO2 from burning gas. Both are contributing to rapid climate change, a cause of increasingly dangerous weather events. Methane explosions and fires can destroy life and property.

With "District SAFE,” WGL wants $215 million from DC residents to continue the same business-as-usual pipe replacement work that burdens ratepayers with infrastructure costs and will keep DC dependent on methane gas for decades to come. No matter what it’s called, our position is the same: no more money for this accelerated pipeline replacement project.

Submit a comment to the PSC today. Tell them NO to the District SAFE Plan that does anything but keep us safe and encourage them to pursue meaningful energy planning.
