Tell Your State Senator: We Need to Invest in Language Access for All!
The Massachusetts Senate Committee on Ways and Means recently released its FY23 budget proposal. In exciting news, Senator DiDomenico has filed an important amendment to the budget that would ensure that immigrant and limited English proficient families can access essential state services in their primary language.
Amendment #139 (Sen. DiDomenico) would provide $8 million to improve the capacity of our public-facing state agencies to meet the critical language access needs of our Commonwealth's increasingly diverse population.
The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the inability of state agencies to provide desperately needed information and services in languages other than English. As one of the most linguistically diverse states in the country, we must ensure that limited English proficient residents of Massachusetts have equal access to public health information, education, unemployment assistance, healthcare, housing, and other crucial services!
