Tell your U.S. Senators: support the Myanmar civil disobedience movement
Tell your U.S. Senators to support the Myanmar civil disobedience movement by sponsoring Senate Resolution 105.
On February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military seized power in a coup d'etat, imprisoning Aung San Suu Kyi, senior figures from her ruling party, and prominent pro-democracy and human rights advocates.
In response to this coup, young people in Myanmar have taken to the streets in a new #CivilDisobedienceMovement (CDM) demanding an end to military rule. They are calling on the international community to impose tough and targeted sanctions on the military, including its business conglomerates Myanmar Economic Holding Limited (MEHL) and Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC).
The military is now brutally cracking down, injuring and killing peaceful pro-democracy protesters. It is vital that Congress honor CDM's call for tougher targeted sanctions on both military officers and the companies that they own and control.
A bipartisan group of senators, led by Jeff Merkley (D, Oregon) and Todd Young (R, Indiana), have introduced the Senate Resolution 105 condemning the Myanmar military coup. The resolution further calls on the U.S. Administration to impose new tougher targeted sanctions on the Myanmar military and its business interests in line with the call of Myanmar's civil disobedience movement.
Today, tell your U.S. Senators to support and co-sponsor Senate Resolution 105.
