Urge Your Members of Congress to Support South Korea’s Democracy
ACTION ALERT: Have your Members of Congress spoken out in support of South Korea’s mass movement for democracy against President Yoon Suk Yeol?
President Biden has previously touted an “ironclad” alliance with Yoon’s government as his legacy. However, Yoon’s attempts to impose martial law and undermine democracy and human rights in South Korea demonstrate that he is unfit to govern one of Asia’s largest democracies. Before Yoon does more damage to South Korean democracy or puts the Korean peninsula at further risk of war, President Biden and congressional representatives must condemn Yoon's illegal actions. We must raise our voices in solidarity with the South Korean peoples' mass movement for democracy!
- Identify your U.S. House Representative and your two U.S. Senators using your home address; if their phone numbers are not displayed, go to the official website of each official. Call each of your elected officials’ Washington, DC, offices first and leave a voicemail if nobody picks up. Most congressional offices ask for callers’ name, address, and phone number to confirm that you are a constituent. We recommend mentioning this information when you call to guarantee that your message is recorded, but you are not obligated to do so.
- Use this sample script: Hello, my name is ________ and I live in _________[city and state/territory]. As a constituent, I am urging you to add your voice to the growing call to support South Korean mass movement for democracy against President Yoon Suk Yeol’s authoritarian actions, especially his recent illegal attempt to declare martial law. Representatives Ilhan Omar, Barbara Lee, Andy Kim, and Brad Sherman have spoken out. It is imperative that the United States make clear that it is no longer an “ironclad” ally of an authoritarian leader whose dangerous actions severely threatened South Korean citizens’ rights. I urge you to take a stand against President Yoon’s attacks on democracy. Will you issue a statement in support of the movement for democracy and human rights in South Korea?
If your representative has already issued a statement, send a note of appreciation for their act of solidarity and support of South Korean democracy.
